Born in Finland, I moved to London in 1999 to study
at Goldsmith’s College, University of London for a
BA in Media & Communications. After graduating in
2002, I worked for the BBC until starting my MA in
Editing at the National Film & Television School (UK)
in 2005. Since graduating in 2007, I have been
based in London working as a freelance Film Editor
both in the UK and abroad.
I won the Best Editing award at the Kodak Student Commercial Competition in 2007,
and was nominated for Best Editing at the LA 168 Film Competition in 2008. I was also
selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2008, which was followed by For the Love
of God being shortlisted for an Oscar Academy Award.
My films have been in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival (For the Love
of God), Venice Film Festival (The Nine Muses, Friends Forever), Berlin Film Festival
(Firewood), Sundance Film Festival (The Nine Muses, For the Love of God) and Edinburgh
International Film Festival (The End for Beginners, Friends Forever), broadcast on
Channel 4, Film4, Canal+ and YLE Finland, and won numerous international awards.
My award-winning debut feature film, The Nine Muses, was released theatrically in the US
in October 2011 and the UK in January 2012 to critical acclaim. The Empire Magazine awarded
the film four stars, stating: "The mix of spoken word and music (selected from a daunting
range of sources) is as rich as editor Miikka Leskinen's visual blend, which often dazzles
with its audacity."
Working with a range of directors with diverse styles, my body of work consists of
fiction, documentary, music videos and animation, filmed across the globe from Finland,
UK, France and Romania to the United States, Rwanda, India, China and Japan. Apart
from English, I have edited work in Finnish, French, Kinyarwandan, Hindi and Mandarin
Chinese.
